Frequently asked questions about Suvarnaprashan

Swarnaprashan contains gold (swarna) bhasma. So is it safe to be administered to kids? 

Swarna bhasma improves heart health, immunity and brain functions. It aids in wound healing and is good for the eyes. Also,  Ayurvedic Rasashastra has emphasized a lot on the purification of minerals before their usage in medicines. The gold used in Swarnaprashan undergoes rigorous purification in the form of bhavana (trituration with specified herbal decoctions) , maarana (incineration at a precise temperature using specific quantity of fuel (dung cakes) for a definite time). These procedure reduce the particle quantity to 50-70 nanometre and it has been found  that the smaller the quantity of the bhasma particles, the better it gets absorbed via oral route. 

Why is Swarnaprashan administered only on Pushya Nakshatra? 

In old days, Swarnaprashan was administered every day to the kids from birth till the age of 16 years. You can still follow this pattern. However, nowadays it is not very cost effective to administer Swarnaprashan every day so it is given on the day of Pushya Nakshatra. This particular day is considered to be highly auspicious for any medicine related tasks like collecting the raw materials of a medicine, making a remedy or starting a new treatment. Hence, this day is preferred nowadays for the administration of Swarnaprashan. 

What things have to be kept in mind while taking Swarnaprashan?

Swarnaprashan is preferably given on an empty stomach however this is not a compulsion. However, after taking the medicine, the child should not eat or drink anything for at least half an hour. In case of small kids, one or two sips of water can be given.

Swarnaprashan can be given if a child has cough/cold however must be avoided in case of new fever (less than 7 days old), vomiting and loose motions. 

Can adults take it too?

There is neither approval nor negation in the Ayurvedic texts regarding this. The adults sure can take this. However, for adults many formulations have been described in the Ayurvedic texts when it comes to improving immunity and strength. People above 16 can go for those medicines after consulting with an Ayurvedic doctor.

Does it harm if my kids miss a dose or two?

Not at all.
